Artwork: Whispering Leaves
Whispering Leaves began its life as a photograph, but its journey did not end there. Through a growing confidence in the creative process and a willingness to experiment, the image evolved into a quiet, expressive artwork that moves well beyond documentation.
Gill’s journey into art photography started with the Getting Started in Art Photography programme, where she was first introduced to the idea that photography could be more than capture — it could become a starting point for creative interpretation. As she progressed into Going Further in Art Photography, her understanding of process deepened, and experimentation became an essential part of her workflow.

Working with Whispering Leaves, Gill began by developing the photograph in Photoshop, using Generative Expansion to refine and extend the visual space. From there, the image moved into a more tactile phase. Acrylic overlays and finely patterned glass were introduced, adding texture, depth, and a softened, atmospheric quality that firmly placed the work in the realm of photographic art.
“I started as a photographer,” Gill reflects, “but the course gave me a love of painting and a real joy in producing an original piece of art.”
As her confidence grew, Gill moved into the Fine Art Photography programme, The Next Level, where the focus shifted toward intention, personal voice, and the development of a cohesive body of work. It was here that her approach to photography began to change fundamentally.
Rather than photographing with a purely documentary mindset, she found herself working with the end result in mind — imagining how an image might later be layered, transformed, and reinterpreted in the studio.
“This desire to produce artworks has influenced the kinds of photographs I now seek out,” she explains. “It has completely changed the way I think about photography.”
This shift also opened the door to revisiting older images. Photographs that once sat quietly in archives were given new life, transformed through process into expressive artworks. The journey became not only about making new work, but about rediscovering and reimagining what already existed.
Gill is currently completing the Masterclass, where she is refining her final portfolio — bringing together technique, concept, and a distinctly personal visual language. At this stage, the emphasis is no longer on individual techniques, but on clarity of vision and confidence in one’s creative voice.
Beyond technique, Whispering Leaves speaks to something deeper: the quiet joy of making. Art photography, as Gill has discovered, is as much about how time is spent as it is about outcomes. The process allows space for reflection, patience, and immersion — a contrast to the urgency often associated with image-making.
“It will be an ongoing process,” Gill says, “and I look forward to developing and refining my art photography skills.”
Whispering Leaves is not a final destination, but a milestone — a reflection of how learning, mentorship, and creative community can shape an artist over time. It captures both a moment of growth and the promise of what lies ahead, reminding us that art photography is as much about the journey as it is about the finished work.
