A Refracted Impression by Catalin Marcu

Refracted Impression

People will assume this was made on an easel. It was made through a lens.

Abstract image fragmentation, made in camera. A short course on one technique with Martin Osner. Optical distortion, used to take a photograph apart and reassemble it into layered, repeated planes, closer to Cubism than to anything most people would call a photograph.

See what is inside it

Five lessons on the technique. Six weeks in the Inspire Community. And should you go on to Getting Started, it costs you nothing at all.

The same photograph, twice

An ordinary picture, and then something rather extraordinary

A simple photograph, put through one easy technique, done entirely by hand. Nothing was added afterwards, nothing was painted on, and Photoshop never came near it. What you are looking at is an organic, artistic transformation, made at the moment the shutter goes.

Nine pieces created using this technique

Every one of them a Refracted Impression

By Academy students, and by artists who now advise the Academy. Not one of them looks like another, which is the thing about this technique that keeps people at it.

Why this course exists

It is here for the people who are not sure yet

Getting Started in Art Photography is $690 and eight weeks of your life, and it is entirely reasonable to want to know what you are walking into before you commit to that. This is how you find out, for $39, by actually doing it rather than by reading about it.

You test the teaching

Is this how you like to be taught?

Martin on camera, short lessons, one idea at a time, and a technique explained until you can do it rather than until it has been mentioned. If his way of teaching does not suit you, better to know now.

You test the machinery

The library, the videos, the app

You see how a course sits in your own library, how you find a lesson eight months later, and how it all works on a phone when you are nowhere near a desk. This is the part people worry about most and ask about least.

You test the room

Six weeks in the Inspire Community

Put your piece up, get told honestly what is and is not working, and see the standard of the work around you. Included with the course, and it is where most of the doubt gets settled.

Thirty nine dollars to find out for certain

One technique, taught properly, six weeks in the room, and the money back off the full course if you go on. There is not a great deal left to lose here.
