The transformation

From a photograph to a field of gold

Our Streets and Fields of Gold challenge asked for two pictures, the photograph you started from and the finished piece, in exactly the same composition. This is Gillian’s.

The photograph she started from
Fields of Gold at Last Light, the finished piece

The commonage and cricket field at Kasouga after the rains, a place that holds golden years and the memories that remain of them. Printed, overpainted in acrylic, then embellished with gold leaf and gold paint.

What we said about it

The piece that moved our community most

Every creative challenge we run, the entry our members are most inspired by becomes our featured piece. For Streets and Fields of Gold, that is Fields of Gold at Last Light. Congratulations, Gillian.

Lavishly done, and that is what we love about it. The lavish use of gold right through the piece is beautiful.

The artist

Gillian Mager

Nature and the outdoors are where Gillian finds solace and herself. She loves the bush, its sights, sounds, smells, colours, and endless details that reflect a Master Creator. Wildlife photography was her first passion, but art photography has opened up new creative possibilities, alongside a growing love of painting in oils, acrylics, mixed media and encaustic. Trees have become a favourite subject, she never tires of their majesty and mystery, how they are shaped by the seasons and emerge more beautiful and full of character.

She loves to touch and feel the textures of nature, marvelling at the colours and shapes in things we take for granted: rocks, leaves, bark, flowers, animals and birds. Art photography is her therapy, joy and challenge, and it has taught her to see the world in more depth, detail, emotion and colour.
